Creating art is a talent many can’t fathom. Are people born with it or is it taught? And what does it take to stay in that creative flow? The process of making something timeless is a delicate matter that is unique to every artist. While creative streaks appear to be easy, what exactly does one do when it takes a snooze? Have no fear as these simple tips will fuel your imagination in no time!
- Get messy
Color outside the lines. Try a new recipe or hairstyle. Fingerpaint! Make a collage of magazine covers, photographs, or anything else that’s captured your attention. Make something for the pure enjoyment of it. Stop overthinking and have fun. Release your expectations. Art can be therapeutic and calming when you allow it to be. Remember the best creations are often happy accidents!
Expand your horizons. Go on an outing and explore an unfamiliar city. Take a hike one early morning or head to the beach! Traveling is a universal muse that can help produce the clarity you’re currently searching for. It reaffirms our place in the world as individuals from making self-discoveries. Speak a new language, or just listen. Step out of your proximity as inspiration is everywhere.
- Keep a journal
According to the National Science Foundation, we have 12,000 to 50,000 thoughts per day. That’s 8 to 35 thoughts per minute per person! Keep a journal handy to hold on to the amazing ones. Describe your experiences with a grateful eye. Compile a list of your favorite words, memories, or songs as they might spark that creative energy. Simple observations or epiphanies may hit at any moment; document them for the future. Jot ideas down as they can disappear just as quickly as they arrive.
- Get active
Remaining still for long periods of time isn’t good as it can limit our creative process. Get some blood flowing by rising from that seat and stretching those limbs. Do some jump-in-jacks or take a stroll. Dance freely as if no one is watching! A little adrenaline can be useful, so challenge someone to a race and welcome the victory of pushing your body to great lengths. Wake your mind by waking your body!
You’re overthinking and self-induced stress may be the culprit for this creative rut. Don’t forget, your brain is a muscle that experiences exhaustion just like the rest of your body. Take some time to unwind as working too hard causes more harm than good. Take a nap and relax. Briefly retire from your office and enjoy the silence of a peaceful setting. Sometimes the best of ideas appear in moments we least expect them.
Your ideas have the power to inspire change. Value them. Be empathetic and connect with those around you. Don’t succumb to the pressure of changing yourself to the expectations of others. Stay true to your vision as it is the greatest gift and achievement you can offer as an artist. So write in that journal, take a trip, or doodle all day long. Staying creative is all about staying in touch with who you are!
